Caravan Vacations in the Czech Republic: A Growing Trend

The number of caravans and motorhomes on Czech roads is growing every year. The reasons are simple: freedom of movement, the ability to bring everything you need with you, and a price that works out cheaper than a hotel for longer stays.

The Czech Republic offers ideal conditions for RV travelers: a dense network of campgrounds throughout the country, beautiful natural scenery, and relatively short distances between destinations. Lipno, Máchovo Lake, Pasohlávky, the Beskydy Mountains, and Bohemian Paradise are places that RV travelers head to year after year.

Rent or Buy a RV? Which Is the Better Option?

If you’re just getting started with RVs, you don’t have to invest in your own vehicle right away. Renting an RV is a great way to try out this type of vacation first.

RV rental prices in the Czech Republic are roughly as follows:

Type

Approximate price per day

Small RV (2 people)

1 200 – 1 800 Kč

Family RV (4 to 6 people)

1 800 – 2 800 Kč

Camper (2 to 4 people)

2 000 – 3 500 Kč

Owning a camper van is worth it if you go on vacation for at least 3 to 4 weeks a year or plan to go on camper van trips regularly. The purchase price of a used camper van starts at around 100,000 Kč, while a new one costs 300,000 Kč or more.

What You Need for Your First Trip

Before your first trip with a trailer, it’s good to know what to expect.

Driver’s license:

A caravan is a trailer that attaches to the back of your car. For a combination of a passenger car and a caravan with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg, a standard Class B driver’s license is sufficient. If the total weight exceeds 3,500 kg, you need a Class BE license. A motorhome (camper) is a self-contained motor vehicle: for vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg, a Class B license is sufficient; above this limit, a Class C or CE license is required.

Essential camping gear:

  • Extension cord (at least 25 m, CEE adapter)
  • Water Hose (Food-Grade Polyurethane)
  • Gray water tank (if you don’t have a direct drain)
  • Wheel chocks and stabilizing legs
  • A spirit level or an app for leveling a RV
  • Basic Tool Kit and First Aid Kit

Electricity, Water, and Waste: How It Works at a Campground

Electricity connections at the campground use a CEE plug (blue, round, 16A). If you don’t have one, please bring an adapter. You can connect your trailer or motorhome to the power outlet on your site using an extension cord, ideally 25 meters long.

Water: Most campsites have water faucets on or near the sites. Connecting your caravan to the water supply requires a garden hose made of food-grade material. If you don’t have a direct connection on your site, you can fill the water tank in your caravan.

Waste: Dispose of gray water (from the sink and shower) at a RV dump station or in a portable tank. The black water tank should be emptied at special dump stations, which can be found at every major campground. Never dispose of waste outside of designated areas; it is illegal and inconsiderate to others.

Campground Rules and Etiquette

Camping with a RV has its own unwritten rules. Following them makes the trip enjoyable for everyone.

  • Access to the lot: Drive slowly; do nejste park beyond the marked boundaries.
  • Quiet Hours: Most campgrounds have quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.; please respect them.
  • Trash: Please sort your trash and take it to the designated areas; do nejste leave trash bags by your RV overnight.
  • Dogs at the campground: Always keep them on a leash and clean up after them
  • Privacy: Do nejste walk through other people’s properties, even if it looks like a shortcut.
  • Fire: Only some campgrounds allow barbecuing and open fires; always ask in advance.

Maps and Apps for RV Travelers

The right app will save you hours of searching. These are the most popular among RV travelers:

  • Campercontact: A database of thousands of campsites and stellplatzes (parking areas for RVs) throughout Europe, with user reviews.
  • ACSI: Over 10,000 verified campsites in Europe, with the ACSI discount card valid year-round.
  • Park4Night: Popular for free parking outside campgrounds; shows legal parking spots.
  • mapy.cz: Reliable offline navigation for the Czech Republic; works even without an internet connection.
  • iOverlander: Great for adventurers looking for unusual places to stay overnight.

Insurance and Safety

A trailer must be insured. Liability insurance applies to the towing vehicle and covers damage caused to third parties. To insure the trailer itself, you need trailer collision insurance or special trailer insurance. This covers, among other things, theft, vandalism, natural disasters, and damage caused while parked.

Safety Tips:

  • Secure the trailer with a coupling lock (a bar lock or chain lock).
  • Install an alarm or a GPS tracker
  • Always check the caravan’s connections and lights before every trip.
  • Do nejste exceed the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle or trailer (see vehicle registration certificate).
  • At the campsite, lock the wheels and extend the stabilizer legs.

Where to Go Abroad: Tips for Austria and Croatia

Once you get hooked on camping with a RV, you’ll probably start looking beyond the country’s borders. Two destinations that are easily accessible from the Czech Republic and have excellent infrastructure for RV travelers:

Austria:

The Salzkammergut and Wolfgangsee regions offer a fairytale setting of Alpine lakes with well-equipped campgrounds. Campgrounds in Austria are generally more expensive than in the Czech Republic (sites range from 30 to 60 euros per night), but the quality of the facilities reflects this. Distance from Prague: about a 5-hour drive.

Croatia:

Istria is a camper’s paradise. The campsites near Poreč, Rovinj, and Pula are among the best in Europe and offer direct access to the sea, swimming pools, restaurants, and all the amenities you need. Pitch prices during peak season range from 30 to 70 euros per night. Distance from Prague: about 8 hours. Tip: Go during the off-season (June or September) and you’ll save significantly on both price and crowds.
