July and August have their own charm on Lake Lipno, but also their price: crowded beaches, queues at attractions, and accommodation prices at the peak of the season. September is a completely different story. The lake water is still pleasantly warm after summer, the days tend to be sunny and calm (that’s what’s called Indian summer), and there are nejsteiceably fewer tourists around. If you prefer Lake Lipno calm rather than crowded, this is exactly the right month.

We’ve put together ten tips for enjoying September at Lake Lipno: from cycling and hiking to mushroom picking, the last boat cruises of the season, and wellness with seasonal discounts.

Most of what works at Lake Lipno in September is just as accessible for couples without kids and seniors as it is for families, so you’ll enjoy this overview no matter who you’re travelling to Lake Lipno with.

Why Visit Lake Lipno in September

There are three main reasons: peace and quiet, weather, and prices. The weather tends to be stable and sunny, with daytime temperatures around 18 to 22 °C, which is ideal for outings and a late swim without the scorching midday heat of high summer.

Cycling in Indian Summer: Cycle Route 33

Cycle route number 33, known as the Šumava Trail, is the backbone cycling route along the northern shore of Lake Lipno. The most popular stretch between Lipno nad Vltavou, Frymburk, and Černá v Pošumaví is roughly 53 km long, the surface is mostly paved with short sections of compacted gravel, and the profile is flat, making it suitable for families and less experienced cyclists too.

The whole trail is part of a roughly 205 km route running across the Šumava mountains from Všeruby to Vyšší Brod, so more experienced cyclists can plan a multi-day ride in September, when the trails are emptier.

The route can also be shortened using the ferries across the lake, which run between Frymburk, Dolní Vltavice, and Horní Planá, so you can adjust the loop to however many kilometres you want to cover and how much time you have for the trip.

In areas with birches and aspens, plenty of red-capped scaber stalks and birch boletes grow, while in the deeper mixed forests you’ll find porcini, bay boletes, slippery jacks, or chanterelles. The Šumava forests in general are known for being rich in mushrooms, so a full basket is no exception.

One important rule: mushroom picking is banned in the first zone of Šumava National Park, so check before heading into the forest whether you’re in a protected zone. The best time for mushroom picking is early morning, before other pickers have been through and while the forest is still quiet and cool.

The flat, 7.3 km trail around Olšina Pond is pleasant year-round, but in September it takes on an extra dimension thanks to the autumn colours of the leaves. The trail is suitable for strollers and bikes, and at the end there’s still a chance to swim if you want to make the most of the last warm days.

It’s also one of the quietest trails in the area, making it a good choice for days when you just want to walk through the forest in silence, without worrying about a demanding elevation profile or lengthy planning.

Treetop Walkway: Misty Magic

The walkway leads through the treetops of the Šumava forest up to a height of 24 metres and culminates in a lookout tower with a view over the whole of Lake Lipno. The Finnish sauna typically reaches 60 to 100 °C, the herbal sauna is a bit milder at around 70 °C with higher humidity, and the steam bath keeps a temperature of 40 to 50 °C at near 100% humidity, so you can choose based on how intense an experience you’re after.

Massages need to be booked at least 24 hours in advance, but occupancy in September is lower than in summer, so you can still find an available slot even at short nejsteice.

The Lipno channel bobsled track is the original one: a stainless-steel track roughly 1 kilometer long with twenty-one turns, two tunnels, and several pronounced dips that will lift you out of your seat for a moment. You control your speed the entire time using the brake, so the pace is entirely up to you. It’s the option for more adventurous riders who want to get the maximum adrenaline rush out of the ride.

The Lipno mountain (tube) bobsled track is a newer addition to the site and is built with families and children in mind. You control your speed during the ride using the brake, and the mountain track is also equipped with automatic safety systems and seat belts. Thanks to these safety features, the mountain track is better suited for a parent riding together with a small child. The highlight is two turns of nearly 360 degrees, which give you the feeling of soaring above the landscape from a bird’s-eye view.

The two tracks intertwine with each other, so even while you’re waiting to start one of them, you can watch others enjoying the other one. A tow lift comfortably takes you to the start of both tracks, so no one has to walk their sled up the hill.

Age, Safety, and Who Can Ride Alone

Children from age 3 can ride together with an adult, and alone from age 8. Given the safety features, the mountain track is better suited for riding with small children, while older children and adults will appreciate the independence of the channel track.

Heated tracks allow operation even outside the summer season, so you can go bobsledding in spring or autumn too, when there are also considerably fewer people at the site.

The site is usually quietest on weekday mornings. On weekends and during the main summer season, on the other hand, you can expect lines, especially in the afternoon.

The site includes the charming wooden Bobovka pub, offering both cooked and grilled food, so you can easily turn your trip into a whole morning or even a whole day without having to sort out lunch elsewhere.

6. Třístoličník Lookout

All three have paved surfaces and can be shortened or looped back to the starting point at any time if necessary.

If you’re bringing an older child along on a bike, the Jezerní Trail and Olšina are equally suitable for walking and biking, so the family doesn’t have to split into two groups.

Short loops of up to 5 km for families

If you’re planning just a morning walk, choose the first kilometer or two of the Treetop Trail and the area around Kramolín, a short section of the Lake Trail from the dock in Frymburk, or the first section of the Schwarzenberg Canal from the village of Jelení Vrchy to the Rosenauer Chapel. All of these sections can be walked there and back in one to two hours, without having to plan an entire day.

These shorter options are also ideal “backup plans” if the weather turns bad halfway through a longer trip and you need to return quickly.

Frymburk is one of the most popular family beaches on the entire reservoir. The water is shallow and the slope is gentle, the bottom is sandy, and the facilities are excellent: you’ll find food stands, restrooms, and boat rentals here. Frymburk is also a stop on the boat line, so you can take a steamboat there and cycle back along the trail.

Černá in the Pošumaví region offers a larger beach with more amenities for water sports. If you’re interested in paddleboarding or kayaking and don’t want to go to the trouble of searching for a rental shop, Černá is the place to go. The water is clean, and the surface is usually calm.

Lipno nad Vltavou, the central part of the reservoir, offers access to the water at several locations within walking distance of the main tourist areas. The advantage is its proximity to all attractions; the disadvantage is the higher concentration of visitors during the high season.

How do I get to the Treetop Walk?

By car

It’s about a 5-minute drive from Lipno nad Vltavou. Parking is available right Další to the Stezka complex, but it tends to fill up around 10:00 a.m. during peak season. We recommend arriving before 9:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

Alternatively, you can park at the campground or by the dam and ride your bike to the trail. It’s about a 3-kilometer ride on a flat road.

The cable car

From the center of Lipno nad Vltavou, the Lipno Express cable car will take you to the Trail (cable car schedule) From there, it’s a short walk (about 10–15 minutes) to the Treetop Walk. You can get a discount on the cable car fare thanks to Lipno.card. Families with children will also find it worthwhile to Lipno.pass, which nejste only lets you travel affordably around the Lipno region in many different ways, but also opens the door to places like the largest playground in the Šumava Mountains The forest kingdom, to the Lipno Express cable car, the Bike Park, or the Stezkabus.

Taking the Stezkabus

During the season, there are bus services to the area, as well as a special “Stezkabus” (bus schedule). It starts at the parking lot across from the Lipno Information Center and leads all the way to the Nature Trail and the Forest Kingdom.

A marked hiking trail leads directly from Lipno nad Vltavou to the Trail. The distance is approximately 3.5 km, and the terrain slopes gently upward.

Of course! The Treetop Walk is designed to be barrier-free, meaning it is accessible to strollers, wheelchairs, and pedestrians with limited mobility. The surface is flat and safe.

Nevertheless, we have a few practical tips for you:

The stroller must be equipped with a braking system—part of the route is slightly downhill
With a double stroller (for twins), the passage is a bit narrower, but it’s still possible
Older visitors or those with limited mobility can complete the route without any difficulty

Tip for parents of small children: Come in the morning when it’s cooler in the woods. In the afternoon or in the summer after it rains, the wet wood can be a bit slippery.

There are two places to grab a bite to eat right near the Treetop Walk: a small café on the premises and a restaurant at the Lipno Resort, just a few minutes’ walk away.
